Hyaluronic Acid - A New Fountain of Youth?

In 2000 ABC News presented a segment on the popular 20/20 show entitled "The Village of Long Life - Could Hyaluronic Acid Be an Anti-Aging Remedy?" This spot shined the light on the potential of using hyaluronic acid as a nutritional supplement. It focused on a group of villagers living in Japan who had high levels of the ingredient in their bodies. The high levels were attributed to the peoples' diet, which is high in starchy root vegetables like potatoes. According to the segment, these people had a long lifespan and had beautiful, disease-free skin. It was speculated that the hyaluronic acid was the reason for the good health and longevity of these villagers. This segment earned hyaluronic acid a new nickname of "The Key to the Fountain of Youth."

This segment sparked interest in hyaluronic acid, which is a glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in the human body. It works with the body in the formation of cartilage by attaching to the collagen and elastin necessary to form the material. This helps cushion the joints and keep them mobile and flexible. Hyaluronic acid doubles as lubrication for the joints. The acid is found in the highest levels in the skin, umbilical cord, cartilage, blood vessels, extracellular matrix, synovial joint fluid, and the vitreous humor of the eye.

Every bodily tissue has some measure of hyaluronic acid present. Those cells that do not come in contact with blood are nourished with the help of the acid. Hyaluronic acid also helps remove waste products from these same tissues. Cartilage is one type of tissue that relies on the acid for nourishment and waste removal, and without the help of the acid the body's cartilage becomes brittle, which can lead to joint problems. Hyaluronic acid helps many tissues of the body retain the water they need to function properly because it is highly concentrated in the space between cells known as the extracellular matrix. This matrix is filled with fluid, and the hyaluronic acid helps keep the fluid there.

Hyaluronic acid has been used in both the medical and cosmetic fields. Doctors have been using an FDA approved injection made of the ingredient to help relieve pain. The cosmetics industry has added the ingredient to topical products designed to moisturize the skin in an attempt to help lock in the skin's natural moisture. Cosmetic surgeons also use it in a wrinkle-reducing injection.

The most common natural source of hyaluronic acid is the comb of roosters, where it is quite abundant. Rooster combs can be processed to remove the hyaluronic acid. The ingredient is then packaged so it can be added to injections, creams, or supplements. This is the purest natural form of the ingredient currently available.

In order for the ingredient to be effective, it must be able to travel from the digestive system to the tissues of the cartilage or skin.
