Hyaluronic Acid: Inside and Out

In 1934, scientists Karl Meyer and John Palmer discovered and extracted hyaluronic acid from a cow's eye. They are responsible for naming the new substance from the Greek word "hyalos" which means "glass" referring to the clear appearance of hyaluronic acid. In 1942, Endre Balazs discovered that hyaluronic acid could act as an egg white substitute in baking and he applied for a patent to use it for this purpose. This was the first commercial use of the substance.

A look at the dietary habits of a small Japanese village led to the association of hyaluronic acid with age defying properties. Their bodies had high concentrations of glycosaminoglycan derived from the consumption of starches and roots native to the region. Hyaluronic acid is a member of this family of sugars. The people were also in good health and maintained smooth skin and a youthful look despite their ages. This discovery led to the manufacture of hyaluronic acid pills as a supplement to the depleting supply made by the body.

Now, this ingredient is used in a variety of products for its potential to reverse the damages of aging. It can be added to creams that are applied to the face and body.
