Omega 3 From Cranberry, IncredibleBy Nicole HarmsOmega 3 from cranberries is an essential fatty acid, which means that it is a fatty acid that is necessary for healthy living. While omega 3 from cranberries is essential for overall health, it is not a nutrient that can be made by the body, which means it must be obtained from foods or supplements. The omega 3 fatty acid is most commonly found in fish oils, but omega 3 from cranberries is found in the seed of the cranberry plant. Americans, in particular, do not consume enough omega 3 from cranberries or other sources. According to research done by leading American universities, around 60% of all Americans do not have enough omega 3 in their diets. Research into omega 3 from cranberries began in 1930 when two American scientists that were studying vitamin F distinguished the omega 3 fatty acid from the omega 6 fatty acid. Since that distinction was made, there have been over 500 discussions about essential fatty acids in medical and scientific literature. In the 1970s researchers noticed a correlation between consumption of omega 3 and good cardiovascular health. This led to further research into the fatty acid and its sources, leading to the discovery that obtaining omega 3 from cranberries is a possibility. In 1982 two researchers from Sweden won the Nobel Prize for properly explaining the link between not having sufficient fatty acids in the diet and the effects of this condition. They showed how fatty acids, such as omega 3 from cranberries, worked in the body to lead to optimal health. Today, research continues into potential health benefits of omega 3 from cranberries and other sources, such as fish oil. Omega 3 from cranberries uses the natural derivative of manufacturing cranberry juice. This is because the fatty acid is found in the oil of cranberry seeds, which are the waste product of making the juice. Producing the ingredient requires no chemicals because it is produced through a cold press that extracts the oils from the seeds. These oils are collected and either turned into a supplement or added to foods to enrich them. There are non-food uses of these oils as well, such as cosmetics. The oil that contains omega 3 from cranberries has an equal ratio of omega 3 and omega 6. One benefit of consuming omega 3 from cranberries instead of fish oils is that the product does not have a fishy smell or taste. Also, some people choose not to eat foods that come from animals, which would make consuming omega 3 from fish oil impossible. However, since omega 3 from cranberries is completely derived from plant products, vegetarians can still consume the essential fatty acid without the need to consume fish or fish products. Besides being consumed in a capsule or other supplement, Omega 3 from cranberries can be consumed through specially produced dried cranberries. Some dried cranberries are enriched with the cranberry seed oil. This creates a tasty snack that also contains the essential fatty acid. Not only does enriching the cranberries with the oil increase the health benefits of eating them, but it also intensifies the cranberry taste. These dried and fortified berries can be eaten alone, or they can be added to trail mixes, cereals, and yogurts. Omega 3 from cranberries can also be added to berry juices to increase the health benefits of these beverages
