The Growing Popularity of Getting Omega 3 From Cranberries

By Krista O'Connell

Omega 3 is a type of fatty acid that is not produced naturally in the body, so it must be obtained from nutritional sources, which could include omega 3 from cranberries. Several types of omega 3 fatty acids exist, including stearidonic acid and docosapentaenoic acid. In recent years, it has been discovered that cranberry seeds are a well-balanced and natural source of several essential fatty acids, which would allow people to get a good supply of omega 3 from cranberries. Prior to the discovery that individuals could get omega 3 from cranberries, however, several other sources of omega 3 were well known, and individuals often tried to incorporate more of these omega 3-rich foods into their diets. For those who don't get their daily supply of omega 3 from cranberries, other sources of the important substance include oily fish such as wild salmon, herring, and sardines, flax and flaxseed oil, blueberries, and several types of nuts, including pecans and walnuts.

Although more people are consuming cranberry seed oil to get their omega 3 from cranberries, the cranberry has long been an important agricultural crop both in the United States and other countries. The top cranberry producers in the United States include Michigan, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin, with the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, and Nova Scotia also producing a significant amount. Before cranberry seed oil to allow individuals to get omega 3 from cranberries began to be produced, the large, red berries were processed and sold in the form of sauces and juices, and some cranberries were sold either in their dried or fresh state. While consuming cranberries in this way allows individuals to get a supply of antioxidants and phytochemicals, sauces, juices, and dried cranberries are not a good way to get omega 3 from cranberries.

Although it was always possible to get omega 3 from cranberries, traditional processing methods typically regarded the seed, the part of the berry that would allow people to get omega 3 from cranberries, as a waste product. For example, after juice was extracted from whole cranberries, the pulp and cranberry seeds would be left over. Ironically, it is these parts of the berry that contain the omega 3 from cranberries, but rather than recognizing that they would be a good source of omega 3 from cranberries, they were regarded as something that was of little or no use.

Since that time, however, it has been increasingly recognized that this so-called waste is actually a good source of omega 3 from cranberries. With the cranberry itself becoming an increasingly popular choice among consumers, and the desire to incorporate omega 3 rich foods into diets increasing all the time, introducing products that allow individuals to get omega 3 from cranberries couldn't have come at a better time.

Today, getting omega 3 from cranberries is becoming increasingly common. There are many processing plants in existence that focus solely on producing cranberry seed oil, which has been shown to contain a good balance of omega 3 fatty acids, omega 6 essential fatty acids, omega 9 fatty acids, as well as Vitamin E and a number of caretonoids. This oil can then be used in any type of recipe that calls for oil, making it quite easy to get omega 3 from cranberries. Using cranberry seed flour is another effective way to get omega 3 from cranberries. For those who love both the berry and the idea of getting more omega 3 from cranberries, several companies currently produce cranberries that are lightly sprayed with cranberry seed oil. Getting a daily supply of omega 3 from cranberries is becoming an increasingly popular choice, particularly among those following vegetarian diets and those who do not find the traditional sources of omega 3 particularly appetizing.
